Should I apply to SCIT?

December 27th, 2008

This is a question put to me by scores and scores of prospective students.

Is SCIT the right choice for you? Well, at the cost of repeating myself, I must again express my views. As I have always maintained, decision to go in for a programme should be in accordance with one’s own plan for the future, own interest areas and capabilities.  Choosing a programme to fit into that is the right way of proceeding and choosing a professional programme.

I would recommend, check out the programmes and its contents on the website.  Look closely at possible profiles one would be getting ready for in case a particular programme is chosen.  Now comes the important part.  Look within. Are these the kind of roles you will be happy working in, through most of your career? What are your interests, talents & capabilities? Are you interested in learning new skills that this profile may demand?

Once you have zeroed in on what you want to do, check out its requirements. Of course there are other practical issues in this competitive world. The first is the SNAP score that is a prerequisite to SCIT. Call for GD/PI is heavily dependent on the number of applicants and their scores.  The only guiding figures are from last year which may or may not be a reflection for this year. Check out Admission pages on www.scit.edu. It is important that one should identify alternatives. If you are not in a position to decide on a particular programme, you may apply for more than one.

Yet, if the call of your talent or passion is a particular programme, whatever may be your score it is worth a try.

Advice from elders, professionals, peers of course helps.  But in my mind it is the self evaluation that would play an important role.

So best of luck!

From Soumya: How has the cutoff been calculated to get call for gdpi?
Reply: The cutoff are after adding extra points.  Calls are based on the number of applicants and can hardly be announced before hand.  Indicative cut-off  could be the last year’s.

From Janam: I am expecting a SNAP score in the range of 60-65. I have a query regarding the additional marks added to the SNAP score. I have first class in my 10th and 4 years of engg. studies, but i fall short of getting a first class in my 12th. Would i get 0 marks for it or would i get some marks since i have first class % in 10th and 4 years of engg. studies. Also, since i am a biomedical engineer, i would like to know how SCIT can help me and also about my suitability at SCIT.
Reply: You will get marks for your engineering but not for firstclass in 10th. That should boost your SNAP score. Your suitability? Well, that is dependent on what you want to be and what your interests & capabilities are. You are its best judge.

From Vijin: Please tell me what may be the cut-off in SNAP for getting into SCIT.I have a score of 72 in SNAP.Also I being an electrical engineer, what is the scope for me in an IT related MBA institute & that too in the period when the world is bearing the brunt of recession.
Reply:  Your score seems pretty reasonable. For actual cut-off you may have to wait till it is announced.  But for last year’s details you could go onto www.scit.edu and check Admission pages.  Recession is probably the time to get your qualifications embellished. By the time this batch graduates the economy would have turned.

Reply: ISS stream aims to create professionals for Info Sec segment. For this stream, comp/IT knowledge is useful and aptitude for it will help.  But interest in business is more relevant. So your background is equally good so long as your interest area fits in.

From Navakanth: i’ve got 38 in snap …can i’ve any chances of getting in to SCIT….and i’ve got SC reservation…
Reply: For reservation categories the shortlist is separate. And as cutoff is dependent on the number of applicants, the cutoff for this year can not be predicted. Looks like a reasonable score!
